AUTOnomous work vehicles operating in Railway construction and maintenance

The project is dedicated to the development and testing of autonomous railway work vehicles, based on advanced artificial intelligence technologies, with the aim of significantly improving the safety and efficiency of maintenance and construction operations on the railway network. These vehicles are designed to operate in complex and dynamic environments, such as construction sites, where vehicles and operators share the same spaces and where the risk of accidents is particularly high.

The initiative arises from the need to reduce the impact of human error, which represents one of the main causes of accidents in the railway sector, by introducing autonomous driving systems capable of operating continuously, consistently, and in accordance with safety protocols. Through the use of intelligent sensors, advanced perception systems, and machine learning algorithms, autonomous vehicles will be able to detect obstacles, recognize the presence of operators, prevent collisions, and adapt their behavior to the operating conditions in real time.

The project places particular emphasis on human-machine interaction and the cooperation between autonomous systems and field personnel, promoting greater situational awareness and effective communication among vehicles, operators, and control centers. The modular and scalable approach of the developed solutions will allow integration with existing infrastructures and adaptation to different types of vehicles and operational scenarios.

Through the development of these technologies, the project aims to define new standards for safety in railway construction sites, while simultaneously opening up new industrial opportunities in a largely unexplored field. The introduction of autonomous driving in railway work vehicles represents a key step towards a safer, more efficient, and technologically advanced railway system.
