Battery Storage System for Bimodal Trains
Hitachi Rail STS S.p.A. has developed a battery train using the existing HMU (Hybrid Multiple Unit) platform, with a range of about 100-120 km. The modification and transformation of this platform, replacing the traditional diesel generator with a battery pack, improves energy efficiency and reduces the environmental impact of rail transport.
The use of batteries instead of the conventional diesel generator increases the sustainability of the train, enhancing energy efficiency through energy recovery during braking phases and eliminating local CO2 emissions, as well as reducing global emissions throughout the well-to-wheel cycle. The battery train thus contributes to the decarbonization of the transport sector by reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
Fully electric bimodal trains meet the growing demands for energy efficiency and reduced environmental impact according to European regulations for sustainable mobility, allowing for high service flexibility on electrified and non-electrified lines, quickly replacing diesel/electric trains, contributing to a cleaner railway network and improving air quality in the served areas. The challenge for railway manufacturers in the coming years will be to increase energy efficiency by adopting different technological solutions and innovative materials for intelligent energy use, reducing both local and global environmental impact.
