Renewable Composite Solutions for Solar-Powered Cars

The R-ECOCAR project aimed to demonstrate the feasibility of producing large automotive components in thermosetting fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) using recycled materials. To this end, recycled carbon fibers (rCF) were used as reinforcement in carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) for the production of automotive components. In particular, a front bumper and a rear hood were made, mounted on the Emilia5 vehicle powered by solar energy, built for the World Solar Challenge.

The R-ECOCAR project thus demonstrated the real possibility of producing large components in polymer matrix composite materials using rCF, bridging the gap between the production of
