Chemical Recycling for the Decarbonisation of Seat Cushions

The project CHANCES (Chemical Recycling for the Decarbonisation of Seat Cushions) has developed an innovative chemical recycling process for polyurethane foams, a material commonly used in automotive seats. At the end of their life, these foams are usually disposed of in landfills or incinerated, resulting in a waste of valuable resources and greenhouse gas emissions.

CHANCES has introduced a new recycling technology assisted by microwaves, which transforms waste foams into recycled chemical bricks (polyols), reusable for the production of new high-quality foams. Laboratory tests have shown that up to 30% of virgin raw materials can be replaced with recycled materials without compromising performance.

This circular approach helps reduce environmental impact: life cycle analysis has highlighted a reduction in CO₂ emissions and a lower use of fossil resources. The process supports the decarbonisation of the automotive sector and aligns with the objectives of the European Green Deal. Additionally, the technology opens new business opportunities for the industry, including recycling services and the production of sustainable materials. CHANCES demonstrates how scientific innovation can transform waste into valuable resources, generating environmental and economic benefits for a more circular future.
