A new bio-based binder for asphalt applications has been developed using components derived from renewable biomass sources, including algae collected from sensitive ecosystems. The innovation aims to reduce the environmental impact of road construction by partially replacing fossil-based bitumen with biologically sourced materials.
The binder shows promising performance in terms of high temperature resistance and contributes to the circular economy by transforming waste biomass into value-added resources. In particular, the project explores the valorization of algal proliferation in the Laguna di Orbetello, converting an environmental concern into a resource opportunity.
